The contamination was discovered during routine sample testing. There have been no confirmed reports of illness or adverse reactions due to consumption of these products. E. coli O26 and O45 are non-O157 Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) strains that can cause diarrhea, vomiting, and, rarely, hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS).
Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. The products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase. FSIS and the company are concerned that some product may be frozen and in consumers' freezers. Consumers should cook boneless veal to an internal temperature of 145°F to ensure safety.
