Plain-English summary
Jennie-O Turkey Store Sales, LLC is recalling approximately 147,276 pounds of raw ground turkey products that may be associated with an illness outbreak of Salmonella Reading. The affected products were produced on September 11, 2018, and include various 1-lb. packages of ground turkey and seasoned ground turkey with specific use-by dates in October 2018. These items bear establishment number P-190 and were shipped to retail locations nationwide.
The recall is part of a broader investigation by the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), the CDC, and state health partners into an illness cluster involving 164 case-patients in 35 states. Traceback activities identified a sample of Jennie-O ground turkey from a case-patient's home that tested positive for the outbreak strain. FSIS notes that additional products from other companies may also be recalled as the investigation continues.
Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them and should throw them away or return them to the place of purchase. FSIS advises that some product may be frozen in consumers' freezers. To protect against Salmonella, consumers should always cook turkey and other poultry products thoroughly to a safe internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit and wash their hands after handling raw poultry.
