The recall was initiated after in-plant verification activities discovered that lingual tonsils, a type of lymphatic tissue located at the base of the tongue, were not removed. Lingual tonsils are classified as specified risk materials (SRMs) because they may contain the infective agent in cattle infected with Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE). FSIS regulations prohibit the use of SRMs in human food to minimize potential human exposure to the BSE agent.
FSIS and the company have received no reports of adverse reactions due to the consumption of these products.
