Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a high-risk pathogen (E. coli O157:H7) with reported illnesses, but no deaths or FDA Class I/USDA Class I designation is explicitly stated in the source text, fitting the 'High' severity criteria for high-risk pathogens with reported illness but no fatalities.
Plain-English summary
PT Farm, LLC, a North Haverhill, N.H. establishment, is recalling approximately 8,800 pounds of raw beef products that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. The recalled items include various weights and sizes of raw intact and non-intact beef products (ground beef, ground beef patties, and other sub-primal cuts) produced between June 6 and June 16, 2016. The products are sold under the brands Chestnut Farms, PT Farm, Miles Smith Farm, and Robie Farm, and bear establishment number M8868 inside the USDA mark of inspection.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) was notified of an E. coli O157:H7 illness cluster on July 20, 2016. Working with the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services, FSIS determined a link between the beef products and the cluster. Epidemiological investigation identified 14 case-patients with illness onset dates ranging from June 15 to July 10, 2016. Most illnesses were reported from New Hampshire (10), with 2 from Massachusetts, 1 from Maine, and 1 from Vermont. Traceback for 11 case-patients led back to a single slaughter date at PT Farm.
The affected products were shipped to retail locations and for institutional use in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont. FSIS and the company are concerned that some product may be frozen and in consumers' freezers. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them and should throw them away or return them to the place of purchase. E. coli O157:H7 is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause dehydration, bloody diarrhea, and abdominal cramps, and in some cases, hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a type of kidney failure.
