What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: This recall involves a structural fuel system defect with significant potential for fire risk due to fuel tank melting and leakage. However, no injuries or deaths have been reported, placing this in the High category per the rubric for risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.
Plain-English summary
Hyundai Motor America is recalling certain 2020-2023 Hyundai Sonata vehicles due to a defective check valve in the fuel system. The damaged check valve allows air to enter the fuel tank, causing it to expand.
When the fuel tank expands, it can contact hot exhaust components. This contact causes the fuel tank to melt. A melted fuel tank can leak gasoline, significantly increasing the risk of vehicle fire.
Hyundai has notified owners by mail starting March 13, 2026. The remedy consists of inspecting and replacing the check valve, inspecting the fuel tank assembly for damage and replacing it if necessary, and updating the engine control unit software. All repairs will be performed free of charge.
Owners should contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460 with questions. The recall number is 25V796000 (NHTSA) or 286 (Hyundai). Approximately 85,043 vehicles are affected.
