2021-2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee suspension control arm separation risk

Certain 2021-2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles may have a defective upper control arm ball joint that can separate from the steering knuckle, causing the wheel to fall outward and loss of vehicle control.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The defect is structural (suspension ball joint separation causing wheel separation), but no injuries or crashes have been reported. This meets the Score 3 criterion: risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.

Plain-English summary

Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2021-2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L and 2022-2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles due to a defect in the upper control arm ball joint and steering knuckle. The ball joint and knuckle may separate, causing the wheel to fall outward.

When this separation occurs, the vehicle loses control. Loss of vehicle control increases the risk of a crash.

Approximately 338,238 vehicles are affected. The remedy is the replacement of the upper control arm pinch bolts at no charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on April 2, 2024. Owners should contact FCA US customer service at 1-800-853-1403, or NHTSA's Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) for more information.
