What this means for you
Our assessment, not the agency’s: severity 4/5 (Severe).
The hazard poses a serious risk of illness, injury, or structural failure. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (power relay assembly) that increases the risk of a fire, which aligns with the rubric criteria for a Severe (4) rating involving significant injury or property-damage risks.
Plain-English summary
Hyundai Motor America is recalling certain 2017-2018 Ioniq Hybrid (HEV) and Ioniq Plug-in Hybrid (PHV) vehicles. This recall affects vehicles that were previously recalled under NHTSA recall number 18V-704. The defect involves the Power Relay Assembly (PRA) located underneath the rear seat, which may overheat.
An overheated PRA increases the risk of a fire. This recall replaces the previous NHTSA recall number 18V-704. Vehicles that were already repaired under the previous recall will need to have the new remedy completed.
Dealers will inspect and replace the main relay or PRA, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on August 23, 2022. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 232.
