2020 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Braking System Defect Increases Crash Risk
Chrysler is recalling the 2020 Alfa Romeo Stelvio due to a defect in the anti-lock braking system. Hard braking can cause the ABS hydraulic control unit rotor shaft to separate, reducing braking performance and increasing crash risk.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: This recall involves a structural defect in the critical braking system. The defect can cause the ABS hydraulic control unit rotor shaft to separate, resulting in loss of braking assist and ABS functionality, which directly increases the risk of crashes.
Plain-English summary
Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain Alfa Romeo vehicles with defects in their anti-lock braking systems. The recall affects 2020 Alfa Romeo Stelvio vehicles, as well as 2019 and 2021 Stelvio models, and 2020 and 2021 Giulia models.
The defect involves the anti-lock brake system (ABS) hydraulic control unit (HCU). Under hard braking conditions, the rotor shaft in the HCU can separate. This separation reduces braking assist and causes the ABS to stop functioning, which decreases overall braking performance and increases the risk of a crash.
Owner notification letters were mailed on June 29, 2021. Dealers will replace the ABS HCU free of charge. Owners can contact FCA US LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403, or contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153).
