Honda Recalls 2013-2015 Accord Vehicles for Drive Shaft Defect

Honda is recalling 2013-2015 Accord vehicles with 4-cylinder engines and CVTs in 23 states and D.C. because a lubricant issue may cause drive shafts to break, risking loss of power or vehicle roll-away.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (drive shaft) that can cause a sudden loss of drive power or vehicle roll-away, increasing the risk of a crash or injury, which aligns with the 'Severe' criteria for structural defects and significant injury reports.

Plain-English summary

Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2013-2015 Accord vehicles equipped with a 4-cylinder engine and a continuously-variable transmission (CVT). The recall affects vehicles that were originally sold or ever registered in Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

The drive shafts on these vehicles were assembled with a lubricant that may have degraded the protective coating. This degradation makes the drive shafts more susceptible to damage from road salt or other contaminants, which can potentially cause the drive shafts to break. A broken drive shaft may cause a sudden loss of drive power. Additionally, the vehicle could roll away if the parking brake has not been applied before the vehicle is exited. Either condition can increase the risk of a crash or injury.

Honda will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the drive shafts, replacing both the left and right drive shafts if necessary, free of charge. The recall began on February 4, 2021. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
