Kia Recalls Optima, Sportage, and Sorento for Fuel Leak Risk
Kia is recalling 2011-2018 Optima, Sportage, and Sorento vehicles that had previous engine replacements due to a potential fuel pipe defect that could cause a leak and fire.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a fuel leak that can increase the risk of a fire, which aligns with the rubric criterion for 'significant injury/property-damage reports' or structural vehicle defects involving fire hazards.
Plain-English summary
Kia Motors America is recalling certain 2011-2017 Optima, 2012-2017 Sorento, and 2011-2018 Sportage vehicles. This recall applies specifically to vehicles that previously received an engine replacement under recall number 17V-224, warranty, or the Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS) Product Improvement Campaign.
The high pressure fuel pipe connecting to the fuel pump outlet may have been damaged, misaligned, or improperly torqued during the previous engine replacement procedure. This defect can cause a fuel leak, which increases the risk of a fire if an ignition source is present.
Kia has notified owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the fuel pipe as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on January 17, 2019. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
