Honda Recalls GL1800 Motorcycles Due to Air Bag Inflator Rupture Risk
Honda is recalling 2006-2010 GL1800 motorcycles in specific regions because air bag inflators may rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious injury or death.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The source text explicitly states that inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the rider, resulting in serious injury or death, which aligns with the rubric criterion for 'significant injury/property-damage reports' or structural vehicle defects involving serious harm potential.
Plain-English summary
Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain model year 2006-2010 Honda GL1800 (Gold Wing) motorcycles. The recall covers vehicles manufactured between February 8, 2006, and May 14, 2009, that were originally sold or registered in specific states and territories designated as "Zone A" (including Alabama, California, Florida, and others). Additionally, certain 2006-2008 models manufactured between May 10, 2007, and May 14, 2009, sold or registered in "Zone B" states (including Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, and others) are also subject to the recall. Motorcycles not originally sold or registered in these zones are not included.
The defect involves the air bag inflator, which may rupture during deployment due to propellant degradation caused by long-term exposure to humidity and temperature cycling. If the inflator ruptures in a crash, metal fragments may strike the rider, resulting in serious injury or death.
Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the air bag module containing the inflator free of charge. Honda distributed an interim notification to owners on July 19, 2016. Owners can contact Honda customer service at 1-866-784-1870 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
