What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a defect that may cause wheel separation and a crash, which aligns with the rubric criterion for 'significant injury/property-damage reports' or structural vehicle defects, warranting a Severe rating.
Plain-English summary
Stanley Assembly Technologies (SAT) is recalling certain Mac Data Torq air-impact wrenches (part number ADT006) and Stanley Data Torq air-impact wrenches (part number 24N100006) manufactured between September 23, 2015, and January 5, 2016. These computer-controlled tools are used to tighten vehicle lug nuts. The recall involves 49 units.
The recalled wrenches contain a software error that may allow the tool to produce more torque than the amount set by the operator. If the lug nuts are over-tightened, the wheel attaching studs may fracture, causing the wheel to separate from the vehicle and increasing the risk of a crash.
SAT will notify purchasers of the tools. The recall began on August 25, 2016. Owners should contact SAT customer service at 1-614-876-3809 to have the impact wrenches recalibrated and the software error corrected. Owners may also contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or visit www.safercar.gov.
