What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a component that may detach and fall into the roadway, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash, which aligns with the rubric criteria for significant injury or property damage reports.

Plain-English summary

Cummins Inc. is recalling certain Cummins Emission Solution Ecofit Tier2 DOC Raincaps. The affected parts, including part numbers 4354195, A048L539, 4352927, A047A112, and 89486A, were manufactured between December 17, 2012, and October 29, 2014. These raincaps are used on exhaust aftertreatment systems.

The recall is necessary because the raincap lid may detach during transport or while the engine is operating stationary. If the lid detaches during transport, it can fall into the roadway, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash. If it detaches during stationary operation, it can fall and cause personal injury. Additionally, the raincap lid may be very hot, which further increases the risk of personal injury.

Cummins will notify owners, and dealers will replace the raincap assembly free of charge. The recall began on January 28, 2015. Owners may contact Cummins customer service at 1-812-377-5000. Cummins' number for this recall is C1583. Owners may also contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or visit www.safercar.gov.
