Cummins Westport Engine Recall for Intake Manifold Sensor Defect
Cummins is recalling Westport ISL G and ISX12 G engines because condensation in the intake manifold may freeze and interfere with the pressure sensor, potentially causing exhaust fires or burns.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk of fire and burn injury, which aligns with the rubric criterion for 'significant injury/property-damage reports' or high-risk vehicle defects, warranting a Severe rating.
Plain-English summary
Cummins Inc. and Cummins Westport Inc. are recalling certain Cummins Westport Model ISL G engines manufactured between September 12, 2007, and February 2, 2014, and Model ISX12 G engines manufactured between February 19, 2013, and February 2, 2014. The recall affects approximately 25,013 engines.
The defect involves condensation in the intake manifold that may freeze during cold weather conditions. This freezing can interfere with the proper operation of the intake manifold pressure sensor. Improper sensor operation could induce elevated exhaust temperatures or flames from the exhaust pipe, increasing the risk of a fire or burn injury to a person near the exhaust pipe.
Dealers will upload a new ECM calibration free of charge to correct the issue. Cummins began notifying affected vehicle manufacturers on February 14, 2014, and the recall began on April 12, 2014. Owners may contact Cummins at 1-800-343-7357 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
