Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (tire sidewall separation) that explicitly increases the risk of a vehicle crash, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.
Plain-English summary
Hercules Tire & Rubber Company is recalling certain H502 radial medium tubeless truck tires, size 315/80R22.5 Load Range J. The affected tires were produced during the DOT week ending dates 5211 through 2112.
The recall is due to a manufacturing defect where the tire liner gauge (thickness) may be insufficient because of an improperly working machine. This condition may lead to the formation of voids (U cracks), which could result in early life sidewall separations and increase the risk of a vehicle crash.
Owners will be notified by Hercules, and the tires will be replaced free of charge. The safety recall began on August 20, 2012. Owners may contact Hercules toll-free at 1-800-677-3573 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
