Medtec Recalls 2010 Ambulances for Missing Seat Belt Reinforcement Plate

Medtec is recalling 2010 Type II ambulances because a missing floor reinforcement plate may cause seat belt anchorages to fail in a crash.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect where seat belt anchorages may fail in a crash, increasing the risk of injury to occupants.

Plain-English summary

Medtec Ambulance Corporation is recalling certain model year 2010 Medtec Type II ambulance vans. The recall addresses a defect where the steel floor reinforcement plate, which supports the rear-facing ambulance attendant seat, was omitted from the aluminum floor substructure in some vehicles.

This defect means the vehicles do not comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 207 (Seating Systems) and No. 210 (Seat Belt Assembly Anchorages). In the event of a crash, the seat belt assembly anchorage may disconnect from the floor, causing the assembly to fail to restrain the seat occupant and increasing the risk of injury.

Dealers will install the missing reinforcement plate under the floor substructure free of charge. The recall was expected to begin during March 2011. Owners may contact Medtec toll-free at 1-866-263-3832 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
