What this means for you

Minor labeling or packaging issue, or a voluntary precautionary recall. Risk of harm is low but real — follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Our severity reasoning: The FDA classified this recall as Class III, which typically corresponds to a low to moderate risk of adverse health consequences. The presence of sulfamethazine is a regulatory violation, but the agency's classification suggests the risk is not severe.

Plain-English summary

Dairy Farmers of America is recalling approximately 438,680 pounds of condensed skim milk in bulk tankers. The recall is due to two loads of raw milk shipped from Beaver Creek Farm in Coopersville, Michigan, which tested positive for Supra Sulfa III (Sulfamethazine), an antibiotic not permitted in milk intended for human consumption.

One load of the affected raw milk was co-mingled with other loads at the DFA facility in Adrian, Michigan, and processed into cream and condensed skim milk. The second load was shipped directly from the producer's farm to Continental Dairy Facilities, LLC in Coopersville, Michigan. The affected condensed skim milk was distributed to The Dannon Company, Dean Foods, Unilever, and Continental Dairy Facilities, LLC in Ohio, Illinois, Missouri, and Michigan.

Consumers who have purchased or received this product should stop using it and contact the recalling firm or their local health department for further instructions. The FDA has classified this recall as Class III, indicating that there is a remote probability that adverse health consequences would be likely to be temporary or medically reversible.
