The recall is being issued because the product contains sunflower seeds that are potentially contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. This organism can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
Consumers should check their pantries for the affected products. The recall covers items with a 'Better If Used Before Date' or 'Best If Used By Date' of MAR 01 2017 or earlier. Affected products can be identified by the following UPC codes: 18627 03000 (6 count retail), 18627 10302 (35 count club store), 18627 37948 (12 count food service), and 18627 03200 (individual bar).
