Bonat Rocket Blower Hair Dryers Corrected for Asbestos Heat Shields
Bonat is voluntarily removing asbestos heat shields from Rocket Blower commercial hair dryers used in beauty salons.
What this means for you
Minor labeling or packaging issue, or a voluntary precautionary recall. Risk of harm is low but real — follow the manufacturer's instructions.
Our severity reasoning: The recall is a voluntary precautionary measure for asbestos exposure where the manufacturer states the product does not present a health hazard and no injuries are reported.
Plain-English summary
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Bonat Inc. announced a voluntary program to remove and replace asbestos heat shields in "Rocket Blower" commercial hair dryers. The Commission accepted the correction plan as adequate. Bonat estimates that approximately 1,000 of these special-purpose hair dryers were sold to distributors for resale to beauty salons since 1972, with perhaps 500 salons currently using them, predominantly in major urban areas.
The affected models are B-10, B-11, and B-14, which can be identified by the label reading "Bonat Blower Dryer." No other Bonat dryers were manufactured with asbestos heat shields. Although Bonat believes the hair dryers do not present a health hazard and is not legally obligated to undertake the correction, the company agreed to do so voluntarily. The replacement program is scheduled to begin in mid-October.
Beauty salon operators are advised to contact Bonat at 250 Lackawanna Ave., West Patterson, New Jersey 07424, to receive details of the retrofit program. They may also contact the CPSC toll-free Hotline at 800/638-2772 to initiate participation.
