Spalding Momentous EZ Portable Basketball Goals Recalled for Impact Injury Risk

Russell Brands is recalling about 13,400 Spalding Momentous EZ Portable Basketball Goals because welds in the arm attaching the backboard to the pole can fail, causing the backboard to fall and strike users. The firm has received 26 reports of weld failures and 2 injury reports.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The source reports two injuries (backboard hitting consumer on shoulder/upper torso and head), which meets the rubric criterion for Severe: "significant injury/property-damage reports." This injury-confirmed hazard with structural failure potential places it above High but does not reach Critical, as no fatalities are reported.

Plain-English summary

Russell Brands LLC is recalling Spalding Momentous EZ Portable Basketball Goals due to a weld failure hazard. The goals have either a 50-inch or 54-inch acrylic clear backboard attached to a black metal pole by a black metal arm. The welds in the arm can fail and cause the backboard to separate from the pole, posing an impact injury hazard to consumers.

The recall affects approximately 13,400 units sold in the United States (in addition, about 62 were sold in Canada). The goals were sold at Academy and Scheels stores nationwide and online at Spalding.com and Amazon.com from May 2021 through April 2022 for between $400 and $600. The backboards are identifiable by the numbers 1010, 1011, or 1012 printed to the right of the CAUTION statement on the front.

The firm has received 26 reports of weld failures, including three backboards separating from the pole. Two injuries have been reported: one involving the backboard hitting a consumer on the shoulder and upper torso, and one hitting a consumer on the head.

Consumers should immediately stop using the portable basketball goals and contact Spalding at 800-558-5234 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. CT Monday through Thursday, or 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. CT on Friday, to arrange for a technician to remove the original arm and install a new arm.
