Angel Line Bunk Beds with Angled Ladders Recalled for Entrapment and Strangulation Risk
Longwood Forest is recalling Angel Line bunk beds with angled ladders because the metal hook fastening the ladder can detach or move, creating gaps that pose serious entrapment and strangulation hazards. A 2-year-old child died in May 2018 when found unresponsive in a bunk bed ladder gap.
What this means for you
Highest-severity recall. Risk of serious injury or death is documented or strongly suspected. Stop using the product now and follow the agency's instructions.
Our severity reasoning: A known death of a 2-year-old child directly resulting from this hazard is documented in the source. Per the severity rubric, any recall with reported deaths is classified as Critical (score 5) regardless of other factors.
Plain-English summary
Longwood Forest Products of Pennsville, New Jersey is recalling approximately 39,900 Angel Line bunk beds with angled ladders. Three models are affected: the Fremont Twin over Twin (model numbers 71210-21, 71210-49, and 71210-67), the Creston Twin over Twin (model numbers 71230-21, 71230-49, and 71230-75), and the Brandon Twin over Full (model numbers 71420-21 and 71420-75). The model number is printed on a label on the headboard or footboard of the upper bunk.
The metal hook that fastens the ladder to the top bunk bed frame can move away or detach from the bed frame when the ladder is lifted. This causes the gap between the ladder step and bed frame to widen beyond 3.5 inches, creating serious entrapment and strangulation hazards. A 2-year-old boy from Columbus, Ohio died in May 2018 after he was found unresponsive in a gap in the bunk bed ladder.
The beds were sold online at Amazon, OJCommerce, Walmart, and Wayfair from March 2016 through June 2021, priced between $180 and $330.
