Plain-English summary
Traxxas LP is recalling approximately 4,900 X-Maxx Monster Trucks and 140 VXL-6 electronic speed controls. The recall includes trucks sold in the United States and 96 trucks sold in Canada. The VXL-6 electronic speed control, model #3365, is installed in the X-Maxx Monster Truck, model 77076-04, and is also sold separately. The electronic speed control manages the throttle, directional control, and braking of the drive motor.
The recalled products pose a fire hazard because vehicle modification or electronic failure can result in a short circuit. Traxxas has received 40 reports of fire and one report of an injury to a finger.
The recalled trucks and electronic speed controls were sold at HobbyTown, other hobby stores, and Traxxas dealers nationwide from November 2015 through January 2016. The X-Maxx truck sold for about $840, and the electronic speed control sold for about $250.
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled trucks. They should return the electronic speed control to their dealer for a free firmware upgrade and installation of a new fusible link, or contact Traxxas customer support to return the electronic speed control for the same service.
