What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a fire hazard with reports of substantial property damage, which aligns with the rubric criterion for 'significant injury/property-damage reports' under the Severe category.

Plain-English summary

Haier America Trading LLC is expanding a recall of certain Haier and Black & Decker chest freezers due to a fire hazard. The recall involves Haier models HNCM070E (7.0 cubic foot) and ESNCM053E (5.3 cubic foot), as well as Black & Decker model BFE53 (5.3 cubic foot). These units were sold nationwide through regional retailers, online platforms like Amazon and Walmart, and exclusively at Walmart for the Black & Decker model, between September 2009 and March 2013.

A capacitor in the freezer's circuitry can overheat, posing a fire hazard. In addition to 18 incidents reported in a previous November 2010 recall, Haier America and the CPSC have received 27 additional incident reports. These reports include three fires that caused substantial property damage. There have been no reports of injuries.

Consumers should immediately unplug their freezer and contact Haier America to schedule an appointment for a free repair. The company can be reached toll-free at (877) 337-3639 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET any day, or online at www.haieramerica.com under Product Recalls.
