Napa Home & Garden is recalling approximately 460,000 bottles and jugs of pourable NAPAfire and FIREGEL Gel Fuel. The product is a clear, pourable gel fuel packaged in one-quart bottles and one-gallon jugs, available in non-scented and citronella scents. It was sold between December 2009 and June 2011 for between $5 and $78 at retailers including Bed Bath & Beyond, Shopko, Restoration Hardware, and Amazon.com.
The recall is due to fire and burn hazards. The gel fuel can ignite unexpectedly and splatter onto people and nearby objects when poured into a firepot that is still burning. This can occur if the consumer does not see the flame or is unaware that the firepot is still ignited. Napa is aware of 37 reports of incidents, including 23 burn injuries to consumers.
Consumers should immediately stop using the pourable gel fuel in firepots. They should return all bottles or jugs to the retailer where purchased for a full refund. Consumers can also contact their local hazardous waste facility for instructions on how to dispose of the fuel.
