Plain-English summary
Telebrands Corp. is recalling Therma Scarf scarves because the microwaveable heat packs can overheat when heated in a microwave oven. This overheating poses a fire and burn hazard to consumers. The scarves feature pockets containing heat packs made of flax seeds and are constructed from polyester and cotton. They were sold in black and camel colors.
The company has received seven reports of overheating, which included five fires. Three of these fires resulted in property damage to the microwave ovens. Two of the incidents occurred in Canada. The firm has not reported any injuries associated with the product.
Approximately 98,500 units were sold in the United States and about 1,500 in Canada. The scarves were sold at Bed Bath & Beyond stores, As Seen on TV retail kiosks in shopping malls, and online through direct response television and the internet from October 2009 through January 2010. The price ranged between $20 and $25.
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled Therma Scarf and return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. If the scarf was purchased through an infomercial or over the internet, Telebrands will contact consumers with instructions on how to obtain a full refund.
