The recall covers approximately 900,000 units sold at retailers including Wal-Mart, Toys "R" Us, Kmart, Big Lots!, Target, and J.C. Penney. Models that have been modified or redesigned so that the fabric is permanently attached and stitched over the lower bar are not included in this recall.
The hazard exists because the adjustable fabric flap, which is fastened by Velcro over metal bars, may not be properly re-secured. If the flap is not secured, an infant can slip through the opening and become entrapped in the metal bars, leading to strangulation or suffocation. CPSC has identified two incidents where infants died from this hazard: a 4-month-old girl in Noel, Mo., in September 2007, and a 6½-month-old girl in Shawnee, Kan., in August 2008.
Consumers should ensure that no child is placed to sleep in a Simplicity convertible bassinet covered by this warning. Because the manufacturer appears to no longer conduct day-to-day operations, consumers should return the product to the store where purchased to receive a refund or store credit.
