Mintek Portable DVD Player Battery Packs Recalled for Fire and Burn Hazards

Mintek Digital Inc. of Anaheim, Calif., is recalling battery packs used with the Mintek portable DVD players with a 7-inch diagonal screen and model number DVD-1710. The recall involves about 116,000 units sold at electronic and department stores nationwide, including Best Buy, from September 2002 through January 2005 for between $200 and $300. The battery packs are silver with a nameplate on the bottom marked RB-LiP01 or RB-LiP02.
The battery packs can overheat and explode while recharging, posing a burn and fire hazard to consumers. Mintek has received 10 reports of incidents, including nine cases of the battery pack overheating and/or catching fire and one report of the battery pack overheating and bursting.
Because the company is out of business, a remedy is no longer available. Consumers should discard the battery pack appropriately. The product may still be used on AC power. Consumers should call the CPSC hotline at 800-638-2772 (TTY 301-595-7054) for more information.
