Plain-English summary
Essex PB&R Corp. is recalling approximately 2,000 Plus 10® Fire Escape Hoods. The recall was initiated because the hoods do not provide protection against certain chemical warfare agents, specifically Sarin, Tabun, and Soman, despite previous claims in marketing materials and on the company's website. The product remains functional as an escape filter hood for fire and smoke emergencies.
These hoods were sold nationwide from January 1993 through August 2003 for approximately $150 each. They were distributed through websites and independent distributors. The hoods are sold as "Plus 10® Filter Breathing Unit" and are packaged in sealed foil bags with blue and white labels, which are stored inside blue zippered nylon pouches.
No injuries have been reported in connection with this recall. Consumers who purchased the hoods specifically for protection against chemical warfare agents may return them to Essex PB&R Corp. for a refund. For more information, consumers can contact Essex PB&R Corp. at (800) 296-7587 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. CT, Monday through Friday.
