Plain-English summary
Warn Industries Inc. is recalling approximately 50,000 A2000 winch kits used with All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs). The recall involves winch kits equipped with a specific solenoid manufactured by White-Rodgers, which poses a fire hazard. This risk exists even when the vehicle is parked and the winch is not in use. The affected solenoid is attached to the power wire between the battery and the switch and is identified by a bracket with one open slot and one hole.
The company has received five reports of ATV fires in the U.S. and four reports in Canada resulting from these winch kits. One consumer reportedly suffered smoke inhalation from one of the fires. The incidents resulted in the loss or damage of the ATVs and, in some cases, damage to adjacent vehicles or surrounding structures. The winch kits were sold through ATV dealers, specialty retailers, and mail order catalogs from November 2000 through May 2001 for approximately $400.
Consumers should immediately disconnect the solenoid wires from their ATV. They should then call their local ATV dealer or Warn Industries to receive a free replacement solenoid and installation instructions. Warn Industries can be reached at (877) 277-0539 between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. PT Monday through Friday, by e-mail at [email protected], or at www.warn.com. This recall does not include Warn ATV winch kits with Camdec solenoids.
