LG Energy Solution Recalls RESU10H Home Batteries for Fire Hazard

LG Energy Solution Michigan is recalling about 10,000 RESU10H lithium-ion residential energy storage batteries because they can overheat and catch fire, emitting harmful smoke. The firm has received five reports of batteries smoking and catching fire, resulting in property damage and one injury.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall meets the Severe criterion because the source documents property damage and one reported injury resulting from fires caused by the batteries. Although no deaths are reported, the presence of actual injury and property damage from the fire hazard qualifies this as Severe under the rubric.

Plain-English summary

LG Energy Solution Michigan, Inc. is recalling approximately 10,000 LG Chem Model RESU10H lithium-ion residential energy storage system batteries. These wall-mounted batteries (measuring about 29 by 36 by 8 inches and weighing roughly 220 pounds) are installed as part of residential solar panel systems to capture and store energy from the panels.

The batteries can overheat, posing a risk of fire and emission of harmful smoke. The firm has received five reports of the lithium storage batteries smoking and catching on fire, resulting in property damage and one injury.

The recalled batteries have serial numbers beginning with R15563P3 and were distributed nationwide from January 2017 through April 2019 by various solar energy storage system distributors, including Sunrun, AEE Solar, Baywa, CED, Krannich, Independent Electric Supply, and Inter Island Solar Supply, for approximately $8,000 per unit. Note that 2017-2019 RESU 10H batteries were previously recalled for a fire hazard on December 16, 2020.
