Klein Tools Non-Contact Voltage Tester Recalled for Shock Hazard

Klein Tools non-contact voltage testers (model NCVT-1) are recalled because the on/off button can fail to disengage, causing the tester to malfunction and potentially fail to detect live voltage. One shock injury has been reported.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: One shock injury has been reported in connection with the recall. Although no deaths have been reported, the presence of a documented injury combined with a defect affecting electrical safety warrants a Severe classification.

Plain-English summary

Klein Tools has recalled approximately 1,690,000 Non-Contact Voltage Tester Model NCVT-1 units distributed in the United States. The on/off button can remain depressed during power cycling, causing the tester to operate improperly. When the tester malfunctions, consumers may not receive a warning of live voltage, creating a shock hazard.

The recalled units were sold from January 2020 through March 2021 at The Home Depot stores, industrial distributors, electrical wholesalers, and some hardware stores nationwide. Retail prices ranged from about $17 for units sold separately to $40–$68 for kits. The tester has a yellow body housing with a tinted gray tip and a black pocket clip/battery cap.

Klein Tools has received two reports of incidents where the voltage tester did not work properly, including one shock injury. Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled testers and contact Klein Tools for a free replacement. Consumers may reach Klein Tools at 800-527-3099 (Monday–Friday, 7 a.m.–6 p.m. CT), email [email protected], or visit www.kleintools.com and select "Safety Recall Information" for details.
